Manage Telegram from InfraNest

Get infrastructure alerts where you're already looking

Connect a Telegram chat as a destination for InfraNest alerts, so problems show up as messages instead of waiting to be found.

  • Alerts arrive as Telegram messages: pick a chat or group as a destination and route any alert to it.
  • Use the ready-made bot or your own: connect with the InfraNest bot for the fastest setup, or use your own bot token if you want alerts to come from a bot you control.
  • Test before you rely on it: send a test message from InfraNest to confirm the bot can actually post before you go live.

NoteA bot can only post in a chat it has been added to, and only after you've sent /start there — doing it in the other order is the most common reason messages don't arrive.

What you can do

  • Chat ID-based delivery
  • Ready-made or custom bot
  • Test message before go-live

How to connect it

  1. 1

Message the InfraNest bot to get your Chat ID

In Telegram, open @InfraNestBot and send it any message (add it to a group first if that's where you want alerts). It replies with your Chat ID.

  2. 2

    Add a Telegram destination

In InfraNest, go to Alerts → Destinations, select Add a destination, and choose Telegram.

  3. 3

Enter your Chat ID (or your own bot token)

Paste the Chat ID for the InfraNest bot, or enter your own bot's token and Chat ID if you created a custom bot with @BotFather.

  4. 4

    Test and save

Select Test to send a test message to the chat, confirm it arrives, then save the destination.

Questions

#Do I need my own Telegram bot?

No. You can use the ready-made InfraNest bot and just supply your Chat ID. Setting up your own bot with @BotFather is only needed if you want alerts to come from a bot you brand and control.

#Why aren't alerts showing up in my chat?

The most common cause is order: the bot has to be added to the chat or group before you send /start there. If you send /start first and add the bot after, it looks the same but won't work.

#What happens if I revoke or change the bot token?

If you're using your own bot and revoke its token, InfraNest can no longer post to that chat until you update the destination with a new token. Alerts will fail silently to that destination until it's fixed, so it's worth re-testing after any token change.

#Can InfraNest post to a group as well as a one-on-one chat?

Yes. Add the bot as a member of the group first, then get that group's Chat ID the same way — by messaging @InfraNestBot from within the group.

#Is my bot token stored safely?

Yes. It's stored securely in InfraNest and isn't shown again after you save it, so keep a copy elsewhere if you might need to re-enter it.
